A study involving 60 women with pelvic inflammatory disease compared the outcomes of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid therapy with a triple drug regimen comprising ampicillin, gentamicin and metronidazole. The results revealed that greater proportion of patients showed diminution of symptoms of pain and discharge in amoxicillin-clavulanic acid group than in the triple therapy group after 3 days of treatment. At the end of treatment, complete cure or satisfactory improvement was reported in 93.1% patients in amoxicillin-clavulanic acid group and in 92.9% in the triple therapy group. No serious side effects were documented On the basis of these results, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid may be considered a suitable option for treating patients with pelvic inflammatory disease.
